The Mentor Experience is primarily about self-knowledge and understanding. While some of our mentees may have a vague idea of their purpose, it is often difficult for them to state it succinctly when asked. Helping our mentees create a personal mission statement is not a quick or easy process, but, in the end, most will find it to be very fulfilling. We may share with mentees information about our own career path, as well as provide guidance, motivation, emotional support, and role modeling. A mentor may help with exploring careers, setting goals, developing contacts, and identifying resources.
Receiving guidance and support from a respected member of our program will enhance professional development opportunities; increase confidence and increase institutional knowledge as well as an understanding of how the working world functions and how to get things done. Our apprentices have a greater awareness of how others approach work. Building a network of colleagues and expanded knowledge of different areas of organizations bring a confidential sounding board for ideas and challenges.
